A Different Kettle of the Fish

- Jawad Haider I was unexpectedly reminded of the quote “Every human walks around with a certain kind of sadness” on my way back to the college bus near Patiala Block. Since long I had a feeling that every soul was cursed with the black of sadness that it covered behind its very eyes, yet put on such a jubilant show of sparkle on the outside. That isn’t always the case with the people who are shattered to the point of oblivion towards every bright thing they come across. Such people, such devastatingly innocent touch-me-not, go-away-what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-you kind of people – I feel for them. For those lucky fellows who chose – or were compelled – to stay at the college after 2 on 22 nd of January, be it waiting for the bus (like me), having a football match with the juniors (yeah, 4 th year guys), or those triumphed 3 rd year folks who walked around the halls and the corridors with sweet-boxes under their arms, shoving the idea of “care to share” about joys of happine

FRESHMEN GUIDELINE FOR THE FIRST SUBSTAGE!!

Image
When you see a disheveled student, holding BD close to his heart, unconcerned about the world and its matters, (running around in anatomy lawn with an expression so miserable, so frightened) to find a spot to initiate his harmonic pendulum like motion which is called the “tactic of CRAMMING”, you know he is a freshmen and he has his first substage ahead: first substage:feels like this Na, juniors don’t get upset.  This situation is nothing more than normal. Rather take it nothing more an adventure (well of course the adventure you'll have to face after every week or two) I can recall. The Frist substage feeling for batch ’ 18 was like:

So our long-awaited result got announced yesterday, and it's amazing that most of us cleared that veritable terror. First and foremost: Heartiest congratulations to those who made it through. You guys should be proud of yourselves (don't let that get over your heads, though).

MYTHBUSTERS: THIRD YEAR WARDS

Image
When I was in first year, I remember telling my friends, “ Third Year main maza ayega .” When I was in second year, I remember telling my friends, “ Third Year main maza ayega .” When I was in third year, I remember my friends asking me, “ Aaya maza?” Third year was unpredictably predictable. You expect it to be a whole new experience and it is, but in ways you didn’t expect. ARE YOU READY? MYTH 1: SELECT MAJOR WARDS FIRST This is the most popular myth that just cannot be dismissed even though people know it is only a myth. Major wards are Medicine and Surgery and are 8 weeks long as compared to Minors (everything else from ENT to Paeds to Chest Medicine) which are for 2 weeks. Now while people may tell you to go for major wards at first for many reasons, some of them may not be so valid. Yes, you may want to get done with them in the beginning of the year if your work philosophy is Work first, party later. Yes, you may do better in them, because let’s face i

THE DREADFUL RUN TOWARDS ZERO POINT

Image
Back from the loooong winter break. A mild cold day. We Friends were happy to meet each other after a long time. But yes, a bit sad too about leaving homes when you have had an awesome "vaila" time. And lets not forget the fear deep down in our hearts. The fear of PRAAF result... *shivers* Imagine the feelings. We, the miserably Proff-result awaiting medical students, who were passing quietly through the stones and dust of the worn out physiology parking lot, met up some seniors who dropped a bombshell on us breaking the sudden news of Proff result  " aur  wo bhi zero point pay"

11 ways to rock those scrubs!

Dress to kill for an evening out......in the OT! 2015. Michael Kors is going to be out with his surgical gown line "Dr.Kors" in spring! We are going to start our fourth year. And the time has come to don the OT-kits! *can't wait can't wait* Those of you who feel like flour sacs in the scrubs, you have been doing it wrong! Having witnessed a number of fashion faux-pas when it comes to scrubs and having made a lot of mental notes about DOs and DON'Ts of scrub fashion sitting at zero-point, here are a few tips on how to look hot in scrubs!

By- Romesa Qaiser Khan. While Pakistani social media and news remain obsessed with how much base Reham Khan was wearing and whether the couple's clothes matched or not, some (a lot of)  more important things were happening in the outside world. Perhaps the worst hate wave against Muslims since 9/11 is gaining momentum in the aftermath of the Paris shootout, the gravity of which can perhaps be gauged by the most trending hashtag on twitter in the last twelve hours #killallmuslims. While most people apparently do not think that the matter warrants any interest, this Islamophobia is day by day become a hot issue for the Muslim community worldwide. These incidents aren't isolated to Europe or Africa or whichever country they take place in, their gravity is felt by all of us eventually whether it is at the time of applying for visas for foreign studies, or pursuing internships abroad or even in interactions on social media. Over time, Muslims have become one of the most

What We can Do

What's killing us.... I was having a discussion with a friend, and he brought up the topic of NCDs (non-communicable diseases). We discussed CV disorders, and he seemed pretty intent on finding a way to prevent smoking--which, incidentally, is  the leading cause of CVDs. But hey, here is our problem: haven't we done enough to prevent people from smoking? We have arranged seminars, posted outside building walls (a proud tradition), hosted walks and marathons and tried everything we could to get people to stop picking up the death stick. And we have succeeded too, although only through a minor fraction. Smoking is what we are already focusing on. It's bad, and nearly everyone knows it. But there is a killer more deadly, and more silent than smoking and CVDs, and that is cancer.

ANIMAL PLANET

Image
by Arwa Anwar (ex 1st year)       No diatribe regarding the grandeur of my university but beguiling is its air; just like HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE, (neither holy nor roman n nothing like an empire). You'll say "what? K.E is not like the dreamt of, thought of K.E? Perhaps flu affected your nerves also. ''I’ll clarify: for a person suffering from zoophobia, it seems more like an ( ANIMAL PLANET); definitely not my childhood favorite channel, it’s about OUR LIFE live from K.E. Lets begin our VISIT TO THE ZOO the way it begins everyday.   PIGEONS

LAST DAY ON EARTH

Image
By Aimen Saeed (ex-1st yr) “Ready to drop”………… yes, these words were perfectly defining us that day. I and my friend were totally knackered by the day’s hard routine, especially the hustle and bustle of the biochemistry practical. We got free pretty late and were too knackered to even think of anything other than sleep. Dragging ourselves on our way to hostel, we were complaining of how this daily routine has raddled us. The street was clamoring with the heavy traffic and people. A busy day.  But it was  some other voice that caught our attention. The noise was so high-pitched that

“ABC”

By Lubaba Mukhtar (ex-first year) No, no, no!! I’m really not dumb enough to try and give a lesson on the English alphabet on a blog: that would be way too main-stream! (Although I think many of us could use a little help with the revision of “alif, bay…”) So if it’s not the English alphabet that I’m trying to indicate here, what is it? Many of you will already have understood what I’m referring to and for those who spent their early teens watching “kyunke saas bhi kabhi bahoo thi and kahani ghar ghar ki, etc,” I’m referring to the famous, beloved, and absolutely enchanting story of three random yet extraordinary army chaps. I’m talking about: The “ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE” It’s almost a phenomena now so it wouldn’t be wrong to use “the” before it, right?

INTRO TO SOCIETIES 101.

-Romesa Qaiser Khan. Exceptional education isn't the only thing that KEMU has to offer. Sooner or later, even the best of us fall and need a respite from the ever-grinding mill that is medicine. Not only do they lighten you up, they open alternative vistas for you to explore. They challenge you to find your talents and channel them into adding dimension to your personality along with of course, the added benefit of meeting new people constantly and interacting with your university mates. From someone who's part of most of them, here's a basic rundown. How they work:- As soon as final year prof gets over, the societies come out of hibernation and they'll host events throughout the year at paced intervals to break the norm. Most societies will first put up notices for recruitment that inform you of posts available and the date and timings of interviews as well as their requirements. They visit your classes to introduce themselves. As freshmen, you will obviously s

I AM BREATHING!!!

Image
Dr Abeera Zafar Tarar (Class of 2013) Its 4 am in the morning. I am sitting in the medical ICU, being the doctor on duty, wrapped up in a shawl to kill the mild chill of early December. My eyes are aching, I have been up for more than 20 hours now. I cant take a nap because one of the four critical patients is extremely serious. My sleepy mind is taking a stroll back to the clothing store I visited this weekend. "Is the pink dress I bought ,better than the one I liked earlier? Ohhh I don’t know. I think the other one was better but it was too expensive. What a pity I had to leave a good dress".
