okay so this post goes out to all those unlucky kids who got ENT unit 2 as their first ward.... i being one of those last yr... ended up studying nothing at the end because the Studying the entire book seems impossible at the time..... and dont even think about getting ur ward tst delayed.. it would just get worse afterwards..... u dont require either the history copies or the assignments for the Ent 2 wad test.... get the Unit 2 notes from the photocopier... the Ent 2 viva questions from the photocopier as well... try as might to do the entire book u wont be able to do it ... just do the following topics .. the rest u have to do for the finals... Ear: 1. Anatomy (v imp.. entire chp) 2.assesment of hearing ( rinnes test, webers test, pure tone audiometery,impedence audiometery) 3.hearing loss (do tables ..causes of conductive and sensineural hearing loss, tympanoplasty,presbyacusis, noise trauma) 4.assesment of vestibular functions (just do the clinical tests) 5.disorders of vestibula

A few of you were led to believe,perhaps by somewhat exaggerated title of my post,that I'm suggesting to completely do away with studies.No my friends! its not about shortcuts.Its about using a smarter set of strategies for success. The first question everyone in first year asks is : Where do i study from? and which books are sufficient? Well there is one thing u guys need to understand and that is : for every subject there is a hierarchy of books, with ones at the bottom being studied by everyone and the one at the top are studied only by the theetas who don't care if they look like a bald skeleton by the end of final year. So we will now be referring to them as the cheeta books , the beeta books and the theeta books. Which ones you choose for yourself is entirely upto you. ANATOMY: Gross Anatomy . 1. As the legendary professor Akram retires a lot of changes are expected and necessary in the physiology department at KEMU. Both 1st and 2nd year are bound to alter their study methodologies........ here are a few things that might help you along First year You guys are the LUCKY ONES because you don't need to spend loooooooonnnnnnnngggg hours in front of the HATED and LOATHED Grey book ......... you have all the time at you want to make your physiology as good as it gets cuz the most useful subject in the wards is gonna be physio ( anatomy is just gonna keep you preoccupied and bio chem will just irritate you like a dengue mosquito) .Guyton is your basic text book.

Dear sophomores, rejoice. You are out of the terrain and terror of the pre clinical years. Welcome to the world of real doctors. Third year brings with it the joys of clinical rotations or Wards as they are commonly known. By now you must know which batch you are in. If you don’t have any friends over there, don’t hesitate for a minute and get it changed. Find someone who’ll go for a mutual migration with you and get it done as soon as possible. All you have to do is write an application, attach your CNIC and submit it to the students section in the Admin block. Then get your migration certificate (it usually takes a few days before you can get it) and submit it to your new ward so that your attendance may be marked over here. Also get your Ward card from the Records’ room in Patiala. You will need this at the end of each ward for your ward test and also for getting a transcript if you plan to go for electives. Hello kiddos!!! First of all....... CONGRATS on becoming the cream of the nation and having your name amongst the BESHT OF THE BESHT . Now that u r in the Pakistan ka taap ka medical college its gonna take some effort to stay here and become a "wadda dactur saab" (not intending to scare u of course :p) So gross anatomy is about the scariest and the most demanding thing you come across in first year......... but fear not little ones ....... it gets really fun once you get the hang of it. Three really important things you should keep in mind Do get the dissection CDs from the learning center (the glass room near DH) or KEMCAANA before the start of each new region. See it at the beginning of each region and also the specific parts before the substages. Do follow whats going on in the DH and try to do the dissection yourself or at least actively follow it.

and now finally the horror of ENT viva as everyone likes to put it ... though i didnt find it tht scary after all... firstly u need to know with which unit u have the long case ... if ur batch has unit 2 written infront of it in the date sheet then u would be having ur long case and table viva in unit 2 and short case in unit 1... vice versa fr the other way arnd.... the viva starts at 9 00 am .... u need the bring the following on the day of ur viva 1. head mirror 2.ward cards (third and fourth yr) 3.Ent assignment 4.Ent history copy

Final year looms quicker than any of us imagine,and five year are over in a gist,when you suddenly find yourself surrounded by Medicine,Surgery,Gynae/Obstetrics and Paediatrics. I will write a short review on the books I followed,the ones i dint,the ones that helped and the ones that did not at all. Why is this going to help you? This is going to be of help,because in all your years you had the heavenly presence of your seniors,whom you could go running back when and if needed,but landing in final year you find a void of that wise guidance,and you have to figure out things more yourself. Find out what works for you . DON'T try feeding on the recipe passed on from generations,not even this one,take it as a guide and then mix and match,and see which potion works magic for you. (pakistaaan ka taaap ka medical college) !! :p After you've all been ushered in , hailed , (and undoubtedly ridiculed n bullied :p )..... n after all the excitement and joy of getting into pakistan ka taap ka medical college has settled down , you guys will have to come to terms with the harsh reality of life at kemu !! i know im supposed to guide , not scare you.... so let me first appreciate u ppl.....: You guys have done a great job (im sure a million ppl have said this to you by now!:p) On top of everything else , you've made your parents proud!! back with more tips :)..... but 1st a little history lesson for the new kemcolians.... biochemistry n physiology in my time were tyrannical regimes under 2 of the most 'legendary' professors ke has seen in recent memory..... luckily, times have changed n these professors wont b terrorizing u guys anymore (hopefully) :P...... so watevr tips iv given below r not 4m 1st hand experience, but are more or less general tips n ideas gathrd aftr consulting my juniors(thnx again 4 the help!!) 1ST YEAR n 2ND YEAR: Physiology: Guyton.... the most famous physiology text worldwide n for good reason. its simple 2 understand n suprisingly easy 2 retain even though it looks huge. whenevr we did a new topic in physio i wud try n read guyton 1st, evn b4 the topic was completd in class. 1nce uv read this, reading othr books becomes so much easier

hey!! first of all, to all the 1st yrs i'd like 2 say ....WELCOME to ke!! Congrats!! uv survived f.sc./ a levels!! get used 2 being called 'doc saab' :P... but with that gr8 power comes gr8 responsibility (forgive my spiderman reference :D).... now u hav 2 survive K.E. itself!! N for the 2nd yrs..... uv given ur 1st prof!! now time 2 do it all over again :P.... but no worries, the 1st one is the worst, at least that was the case for me. the tension n drama is at a peak n u thnk u just cant go on!! aftr ur through the 1st exam u realize its not impossible, n nows its time 2 put ur new found confidence in ur medical skills 2 good use by kiking off ur 2nd yr in style :) here r some things i learnt along the way :)

Midline structures Midline structures include the following (Numbered according to the CT Scan below): Anterior falx cerebri Septum pellucidum Third ventricle Pineal Posterior falx cerebri Fourth ventricle (not shown on the scan below) Midline shifts usually indicate raised intracranial pressure and significant risk for herniation. Less often, they are due to non-threatening atrophy on one side. They can be associated with intra-axial or extra-axial pathology. Different processes can shift more the anterior, middle, or posterior midline structures.

This topic remains untouched and un-taught in our medical institutes, although with our existing resources, we can't even imagine to compete with the rest of the world, however, hospitals like Shaukat Khanum do have the research requirements in them and they do help you out to join them for research electives. Yet, Kemcolians are ignorant of the word "Research", despite some stuff taught by community medicine department that, even in the remotest of chances, doesn't qualify as a true research valid for publication. However, Dr. Maaz has to be credited in a way that he is teaching the use of SPSS in a very understandable way once you are through all that process there. And if you didn't learn to use SPSS there, I can feel sorry for you guys. Identification of the CT scan anomalies was not part of the curricula when i graduated, yet very often you come across CT scan interpretation both at under-grad and post-grad levels. This technique is replacing conventional x-rays in most parts of the world, but what you also need to remember is that a CT scan usually puts about 500 times more radiation to the body as compared to an X-ray, yet there are specific indications for both, that you'll learn as you progress. There is no short book for CT scans, no one teaches you in college too, so thats how I learnt the basics of CT interpretation. Eye viva is the longest and the most hectic ...especially if u r the last batch... 3 batches together give the eye viva... u have to give 5 vivas Viva no. 1 : Long case... in long case u mostly get cataract ... bt u can get other cases as well .. mine was squint... u have to take history and examine the patient and no dnt worry u wont be alone .. two students get a single long case..... bt no both of u wont have the same examiner... ones long case viva would be with an internal and the other one would have his with an external... u wont be wrting ur history and examination on eye examination sheets .. u would get a seperate answer sheet ... u have to write the entire history and examination on it...

4th Yr: Community Medicine Viva Community medicine viva this year was taken by Dr. saira...Its starts at 9:00 am... the batch is divided into two halves of 15... one of the halves goes for spotting and the other one for viva with external. OSpe had alot of questions from immunology... Vaccines comprised atleast 40 percent of our spotting ques... do modules from ur log books for ospe ... Ospe can include baisically anything form the syllabus.. a few questions were from research as well...

This viva is based on the scenario u are given in the form of printed pages... Its mostly from Endocrne...

Salam everyone!!!!!!!!!! I met this guy in Brisbane the other day, a graduate of King Edward Medical College, and he was repenting on not attending the wards at that time, despite his about to be consultant in internal medicine scene........ And that made me think to stress need for emphasizing the need to attend wards. Every now and then, you'll come across the seniors boosting of not attending wards even in final years and recommending you the same, but trust me, thats one of the mistakes most of you commit, even after people like me stressing the importance...... Patients are the best teachers, even if you are not learning anything consciously while spending time in 3rd yr and 4th yr wards, you are learning a lot from the surroundings unconsciously...... however i must say that you need to choose the ward combination wisely. If you can change, try to go to following units: Surgery: South (Best), East (Better)

Books Guidance (Experiences of Class of 2012)   McFearless Says Legend : MUST HAVE BOOKS RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL Pharmacology Katzung Review of Pharmacology  The best book for pharmacology. Concise yet complete. Lipincott Review of Pharmacology      Some people find this better. But after using this book for 3-4 months, i concluded that I could do more with Katzung Review in less time. And trust me, you can only use one of them as primary. (Some topics can be supplemented with the other) Kaplans Pharmacology This is what our seniors never told us but I found quite useful. Both the above books fail to give a quick review right before exam or in the viva. Here this book comes in handy. MUST WATCH the LECTURE DVDs with it. This book was a life-saver for me ! Goes especially well with Katzung review because both have same authors. Reference :  "Big Katzung"  This is lengthy but the smart-crowd still uses it. Not recommended for the average-Joe.
